"Only way that horses will win is to sit there and spend time with them. Show 'em that you're trying to help 'em. Love 'em. Talk to 'em. Get to know 'em. Now that's what you gotta do. You love 'em and they'll love you, too. People might call me crazy, but that's the way it is."

Training Log for Tjalfe Johansen

6/12/07 He was covered in dried mud, so I gave him a lick and a promise grooming under the saddle and bridle and rode. We worked on halting softly and straight, bending. backing, steadiness in trot and some canter. HE did very well. Gave him a nice hosing afterwards, which he appreciated and made him look a little tidier!

6/5/07 Brought him in and groomed and did in hand work. Spent quite a lot of time on the long line working on instilling voice commands. Then popped on and did a lot of walk/halting and bending. He figured some things out. Very good.

6/1/07 I brought his mud-covered self in and brushed the larger hunks off. Then I took him out and did some in-hand work, discussing "whoa", personal space, moving forward promptly, staying between hand and "leg" on a small circle, backing and introduction of a flag, including moving over his body and legs and letting it snap (away from him and near, but not at, him). He was predictably unsure about the flag, but came around nicely. He did very well.
