"Only way that horses will win is to sit there and spend time with them. Show 'em that you're trying to help 'em. Love 'em. Talk to 'em. Get to know 'em. Now that's what you gotta do. You love 'em and they'll love you, too. People might call me crazy, but that's the way it is." -Eddie Sweat, groom for Riva Ridge and Secretariat

Went well. 1/17/09 Lesson with Julia. Went well. 1/5/09 Lunge lesson with Colleen and Julia went very well. 1/2/08 I rode her in the indoor and had some very nice in all gaits. 12/29/08 Tacked up and led to the arena perfectly. We warmed up with some walk work where she relaxed and stretched to the bit quite nicely. On to trot work, including trotting over some poles, she was rhythmic and relaxed and seemed to really enjoy herself. Then on to canter work and jumping over the small jumps that were in the arena and she was very good. She slightly rushed the first few fences, but slightly is the operative word and she soon was jumping them rhythmically. Just a sweet little horse. 12/28/08 She stood excellently for mounting and we stood and relaxed for a while. Warmed her up in walk and then proceeded to some trot work. Helped her stay soft in her poll and rhythmic in her trot and she did very well. Then on to canter work, which started out a little rushed, but got better and better. Very good work. 12/18/08 Worked in the arena with a lot of walk and trot work, helping her relax in her poll. She was really quite good. She has a very good attitude and relaxes nicely when her rider stays relaxed. Her canter work is a bit quick at first, but when given some reassurance, she takes a breath and settles right down. Give me a call sometime to discuss. 12/13/08 Lovely day, so I took her out for a morning trailride. We only walked because that is how I anticipate Julia would go for now. Star was happy to go, a little wanting to trot at first, but when I assured her quietly that I just wanted walk, she got into the spirit of the thing and we had a lovely ride all around the hayfield. Very good. 12/12/08 Still fairly icy outside so I rode her in the indoor. We did some walk work and then worked on crossing over the "bridge" trail item in the indoor. She was dubious at first (most horses are) and then she walked over it just fine. Then we did a lot of trot work, focusing on keeping a steady 12/9/08 Rode in the indoor. She was kept in all day due to the cold wind. I longed her first and she was just excellent. She is quite coachable. Then I got on and we did some walking and halting, focusing on her letting go in her poll and she did quite well. Then some trot work with much the same focus and she took some nice deep relaxed breaths. Canter work was a little tight, but willing and rateable. She did very well and liked the attention and cookies. 12/4/08 I lunged her to warm up and she was excellent. Then I got on and did some slow work in walk and halt, helping her relax in her neck. She was very good and relaxed nicely. Then some trot work and some transition work within the gait. She was polite the whole time, with just a few training things that need shining up here or there. I untacked and wormed her, which she just loved-not. :-) 12/3/08 The horses were kept in today, presumably because of the weather. I groomed her and trimmed a new bridle path for her and trimmed up her mane. Her hooves look great and she appears to be in good weight. However, I would guess that she hasn't been wormed in a long while from her slightly pot-bellied appearance. I think it would be kind to worm her with something. I have a tube of Equimax, (ivermectin and pyrantal pamoate) that I will give to her tomorrow as my Christmas gift to her. She will need to be wormed again in about 2 months. Her hooves look GREAT. I don't know if she hasn't been trimmed in a while or if someone is donating the trimming, but really, they could not look better. This is a very good thing, and even a bit unusual in a thoroughbred, who aren't generally known for good feet. I put her on the longe line and worked her in the arena on voice commands and general behaviour. She is a very quick study and wants to please. She is a quick on her feet, but when she has clear direction she's really delightful. So far so good. |
