"Only way that horses will win is to sit there and spend time with them. Show 'em that you're trying to help 'em. Love 'em. Talk to 'em. Get to know 'em. Now that's what you gotta do. You love 'em and they'll love you, too. People might call me crazy, but that's the way it is."

Training Log for Nelson Stone

8/12/07 Hauled to his new home with Stones.

8/10/07 Jump school in the arena. He's a star. Never blinked or rushed or pulled or weaved. Very workmanlike, good boy.

8/8/07 Worked in the arena. After warmup, jumped over a small jump and he was very straightforward about it. Raise them up nice ride.

8/6/07 Took him on a trail ride. Not incredibly brave, but sane and rateable. He probably is braver in a group. Pleasant sort of horse who is willing to try any request.

8/2/07 Got on and did some more flexibility work and some more work on halt and back. He is coming around.

8/1/07 Worked him inhand which was much improved over yesterday. Yay. Tacked up and got on. He has some major tension in his neck and is so stuck that it is difficult for him to back. He also has a habit of losing focus and tuning out. Got somewhere with that. His leading is better, much more respectful and did not come near stepping on me today.

7/31/07 Brought him in. On the way in he saw fit to step on me and bump into me when he was alarmed by some object in the aisle. Hmmm... I tacked up and in doing so I worked with his neck a bit. He is very stuck in his neck and also a space invader and a bit slingy with his head and neck, not polite. Don't get me wrong, he is not a mean horse, but has a pretty big lack in the ground manners department. After I tacked him I led him into the arena and he was again quite looky and distracted. After a few moments, it became obvious that I had ground work to do, so I took him back in, untacked and put on a rope halter. We had a long slow discussion where I explained yielding to pressure, letting go in his neck, personal space issues and keeping attention on the handler. We did backing, bending and working from the right and left. He is a smart boy and figured some things out very quickly. He could very well be a delight to ride, but I don't get on horses until we understand each other's expectations.

7/30/07 Brought him in and led him to the wash rack. He was dubious about all the things in the aisle, but went past them. He has a white sclera around his eye which makes him appear to be very watchful when in fact it is just a normal expression. I picked up his feet and played with him generally and he did well. I will have to get a wider saddle and bigger bridle from home to fit him as I only have the narrow saddle at the barn, but so far so good with him.

7/28 Picked him up and brought him to KMJ. No issues. Very good start.
