"Only way that horses will win is to sit there and spend time with them. Show 'em that you're trying to help 'em. Love 'em. Talk to 'em. Get to know 'em. Now that's what you gotta do. You love 'em and they'll love you, too. People might call me crazy, but that's the way it is." -Eddie Sweat, groom for Riva Ridge and Secretariat

Claire played the babysitter for the younger horse. 5/20We worked on collection in the field. 5/18 Claire & I and Gabe & Katie went on a trail ride. Katie was really nervous. Claire shied at a skunk. 5/9 We went on a long walk around the farm. 5/8 We worked on stride control in the trot. She really likes to speed up instead of lengthening. 5/7/09 Adequan shot #7 next one due 6/1/09 5/6 I found out she wasn't leaving on Thursday like I thought. We just went on a trail ride through 3G's. 5/4 We worked in the field on Claire's canter to help her get stronger. Adequan shot #6 5/3 We worked in the indoor arena on the first level dressage test except we substitute trot for canter. She was really round and spunky. 5/1 I talked to Jada about Claire and went out to Peterson park for a little while. She was very quite on the trail. 4/30/09 Adequan shot #5 4/28 We worked on roundness in the indoor. 4/27/09 Adequan shot #4 4/23/09 Adequan shot #3 4/22 We went on a long trail ride through the park and Claire was really peppy. 4/20/09 Adequan shot #2 4/18 It was rainy so we stayed inside and worked on being round. 4/16/09 Day one of the Adequan shots. 4/15 We trail rode 4/14 We went over to Peterson Pits and walked through the water by the lake. 4/13 We trail rode 3/31/09 Picked up Claire and took her to Dr. Kersh at ISU for examination of her arthritis. Complete report sent to Nikki. Prognosis positive with management. 3/24/09 They were in stalls today due to cold rain and wind and mud. In the afternoon, I ponied her off of Kelsey for a total of a mile around the jogging track, just to stretch her legs. 3/24 I worked over the trot poles that I set up. We did some leg yielding to both the right and left. 3/23 I set up trot poles to help claire use her hocks a little more and to help me with my seat and balance. 3/21 We did a 1/2 hour of trot work just focusing on correct geometry. 3/16-3/19 Monday was my lesson and the rest of the week was dedicated to keeping my thumbs up. 3/14 Today we just walked around the farm for about a 1/2 hour she was really quiet. 3/12 We did a "course" of cones. I worked on my transitions and I kept her moving the whole time. It was nice to do something a little different and it kept me thinking about where I was going. 3/9 I love riding this horse. She fought me a little on the roundness, but then comes back and helps me with the tempo and not getting too fast. I will miss her when she leaves. 3/10/09 (Camie in). Nasty north wind and some dampness outside so they were in for the day. I didn't want her to get too stiff standing still all day so I tacked up and roder her. We had a long walk warmup and then some dressage work. She was very good. Left lead canter is very difficult for her and right lead not much better. I have moved her to a new vet who I hope to get on the case next week. 3/5 Claire had a ton of energy today. She bucked and ran at the far corner because the door was open. I worked on my seat and maintaining my vertical posture. 3/1/09 We played a game of chase the dog. She was really mad at lucky because he nipped her on the way in. She was wormed with oxybendazole today. 2/26/09 We had the best ride I've ever had on her. Her hooves were trimmed today too. 2/24/09 She went down on the back end when she went from a halt to trot. She seemed ok. We just walked around the pasture to make sure she's ok. 2/22We did a pretty intense workout today. We did long trots and a lot of canter inbetween. She wasn't tired or sore. 2/21 She is stiff and out of shape from my week of being sick. I just kept her moving the whole time. 2/8 She bucked today when we came in from our hack. She wasn't as relaxed. She was much softed by the end though. 2/5 We did a long relaxed workout for both Claire and me. She was really relaxed through her body and poll. We did a ton of transitions. 2/3 She was fantastic. She was soft and yielding. She didn't seem to be as stiff. 1/18/09 Claire was very good out on the trails. The snow was drifted in some areas, but she handled it well. 1/16/09 Hooves trimmed. 1/9 I felt like I was all hands and really off my game. She took advantage of anything I did wrong. She felt sluggish and I was just as bad. 1/6 She was a perfect girl today. 1/5 I extended her workout time a little longer for both our benefit. She worked hard. 1/4 Claire really wanted to please me. Anything I asked she did. She seemed to have a lot of energy and power. 1/3 Claire was sluggish and lazy. She didn't really want to use her hind quarters at all. We did more on her just going off my leg. 1/2/09 Wormed with pyrantel pamoate. Oh boy. 1/1/09 She was such a good girl. She did everything I asked and was able to work as long as I was. 12/30/08 She moved more fluid and I was able to work her longer than previously 12/29/08 She was a little stiff, but worked well for me. 12/28/09 Camie worked with us today. We focused on keeping her really soft in my hands. 12/24/09 Claire was very good today. we did about 20 minutes at a trot just to keep her moving 12/22/09 It was pretty cold today and claire seemed really stiff. 12/19/08 The vet was out for float, rhino/flu and arthritis help. I will get her comments ASAP. I was not able to attend due to the ice storm. 12/17/08 My assistant, Emma Morgan, rode her in a dressage lesson in the arena. In walk and trot, Claire was quite good, though a little tight in the poll. In right canter she was not pushing through, left canter was clearly not comfortable for her. The vet will come out soon and prescribe a program for her to help her with her arthritis. Meanwhile, we are going to continue her in work on the soft conditions of the arena and a lot of walk and trot work to get her fitness up, which will assist her. (Emma's log note: 12/17/08 |
